On that day in 1976 - 17 July

Times were a-changing at the Rainbow; more and more disco discs were being slipped in. I never really had gone to school dances (apart from a couple with friends - bad cover bands and no romance), so these nights at the Rainbow were the equivalent for me.

"Dancing like Brent" was quite a compliment; Brent was the best dancer among our friends and very flamboyant too. Very strange that I got so sentimental about my ex, Robert Marlow; I would have been stone cold sober at the time.

We thought that Ron Romano looked like John Deacon from Queen; for a while I called him Ron Deacon.

Blackie, who wasn't there that night I guess but usually was a fixture, was in an Alice Cooper-esque band called Sister. He ate worms onstage. They later morphed into W.A.S.P.

No idea who the Steven Tyler guy was, but hey, he was already demoted by this date!

17 July 1976

Today I called Robert Williams. I'm sure, I go "Hi" and he goes right on reading this thing about Earle [Mankey - ex Sparks] producing the Quick's album. Robert said the Quick were terrible cause they just copy Sparks. I remember he told me about the drummer [Danny Benair] loving Earle Mankey. He was reading other junk from Record World. He said all these shit bands keep getting signed, but his band is gonna make it. He supposed to call me when he finds out when they're playing in Griffith Park.

Mary wanted to go to the Rainbow so we went back at night. It was dead at first. Mary and I were going to the store and we saw "Peter Furru" [Eric Idelson] and Mary knew who he was, then inside so did Helen and Trudie.

I HATE their new policy of all disco! Eric was dancing like Brent compared with the night before. He kept yelling, "Rock 'n' Roll!" One time I went, "Marc Bolan!" At the end Eric was dancing with some chick.

Anyway, after a while I got really depressed. All of a sudden I wanted Robert Marlow to be there and right when I was thinking that, "Stone Cold Sober" comes on. Mary dragged me out to dance but I felt more like crying. Afterwards I went back in the corner and I felt like I was never gonna cheer up. But we went to look for "John Deacon" and I saw him, with a chick like usual. I only had a spaz. Later on he went downstairs and I told Mary I was gonna go watch him dance and I go down and he's standing there and asks me to dance!!!! I just about died!!! I can't even remember what songs they were but we danced to two songs.

He asked me what my name was and told me he hated this disco shit. I asked him about being in a band with Matt [Matt was a friend of Robert M's but I can't remember what band this was]; he said that Matt was a really good friend of his and that Matt's father had died and he had gone back east. Anyway Ron said he'd come back to dance with me when they played something good. He came down the stairs once when I was dancing with Mary but he didn't see me and went back upstairs.

After the Rainbow closed Eric came up to talk to me in the parking lot. Asked what I was doing; he said he'd probably just go home, get high and think about all the chicks he's seen, but if he found one chick to be with he thinks of her and her only. He likes Led Zep and junk. He has hardly heard Sparks but thinks they sound like Queen (?!!). Anyway, Eric's really nice. Later he left with some chick. [Wonder if he thought of her and her only?!]

Then that guy we thought was Blackie came up. Trudie said he was some geek; he said he was a geek. He was neat, he kissed my hand and kept holding it. He was Mike of Legs Diamond.

The Steven Tyler guy was there; I think he was that guy I saw at the Forum who I thought was the foxiest guy on earth. He's not, but neat.

Then (drool sigh gasp) RON came up, asked what I was doing standing here, if I knew where any parties were (twice). Then he came back and asked if I wanted to go to a party with him at the Hyatt House, which I later found out was Peter Frampton's (!!!!) I said if the others [Mary, Helen and Trudie] wanted to but I guess he only wanted me. Shit! I'm stoked! I'm totally infatuated but that's it, it's weird. Then he got another chick to go with him. Double shit!

Then those geeks tried to pick up on all of us. If that geek has a girlfriend and treats her so great, why does he try to pick up other chicks? That was funny - he held my hands and asked, "Doesn't that feel good?" "No." And he wanted to buy me a hamburger - no way - and I said I hated Leos!! I do! [Obviously he was one and this was one of the first things I would find out about someone in those days, being an amateur astrologer.] Geek. Then he gives Helen the address for a party we wouldn't be caught dead going to!

We were talking to the Libra DJ Mark for a while. Went to Denny's but didn't stop; how am I gonna find Rodney?! [A mystery: why in the world did I want or need to find Rodney?!] Mary and I went to the Denny's by her house; I only had three hours of sleep - I'm so tired!!!
